About Leicester
Leicester is a city with a cosmopolitan environment, where you can enjoy yourself and see original surroundings with beautiful buildings that make justice to the affirmation that Leicester is one of the largest cities in England.
Leicester was at first a Celtic settlement and it was the capital of the Coriletavi, a local Celtic tribe. It was captured in 47 AD by the Romans, and after they left, it ceased to be a town. It began to come back to life in the late 7th century and by the 9th century; it was a prospering town again, being captured by the Danes in the same period. Leicester continued to develop, and in 1919 it was made a city. The first cinema in Leicester was on High Street, constructed in 1910 and a museum was opened in 1926, at the Guildhall. In the 20th century, Leicester's engineering industry and market grew rapidly even though when the Romans invaded, the streets were changed and a space was left in the city centre of Leicester, making place for the only market called the Forum, which had a town hall named basilica.
Despite the fact that Leicester went through a lot since it was built, it grew into the beautiful, modern city that we know today where you can find interesting places see and a lot of shops, boutiques, restaurants, bars and cafes.
The Shires Shopping Centre will offer you the opportunity to see the city's improved market developed about seven hundred years ago.
If you want to taste a little of Leicester's history, be sure to make a stop at the Leicestershire Museum and Art Gallery on New Walk where you can see interesting things.
Here in the city you can find beautiful green parks where you can relax and if you take a walk at Bradgate and Swithland located just outside the city you can find yourself surrounded by over a thousand acres of woods and lovely green fields.
